Why Hand Rub Matters Most at Midvaal Private Hospital
In a healthcare setting, where every second can make a difference, infection control starts with the basics—clean hands. At Midvaal Private Hospital, we prioritise patient safety by strictly adhering to the World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines for hand hygiene. One key component of these guidelines is the use of alcohol-based hand rubs (ABHRs).
But why is hand rubbing so important—and how does it impact everyday healthcare?
Understanding WHO Hand Hygiene Guidelines
The WHO introduced the “My 5 Moments for Hand Hygiene”, a structured approach that outlines when healthcare professionals should perform hand hygiene:
Before touching a patient
Before clean or aseptic procedures
After exposure to body fluids
After touching a patient
After touching patient surroundings
These guidelines promote a systematic approach to reducing the spread of healthcare-associated infections (HAIs), ensuring a consistent standard of care.
Explore our hospital services where safety and hygiene go hand in hand.
1. Fast, Effective Infection Control
Alcohol-based hand rubs eliminate 99.9% of common pathogens in just 20–30 seconds. They are effective against bacteria, fungi, and viruses like COVID-19, influenza, and MRSA. This speed and efficiency make ABHRs essential for fast-paced hospital environments like our emergency and ICU departments.
2. Reducing Healthcare-Associated Infections (HAIs)
HAIs are a major threat in medical settings. Proper hand hygiene drastically lowers infection risks during surgeries, patient interactions, and routine checkups. By using WHO-recommended hand rubs, Midvaal Private Hospital significantly reduces the chance of cross-contamination.
3. Gentle on Hands, Tough on Germs
Our ABHRs contain skin-friendly emollients to prevent dryness and irritation—supporting frequent hand hygiene among doctors, nurses, and staff. Dispensers are conveniently installed in:
Wards and operating theatres
Intensive and high-care units
Waiting areas and staff rooms

4. Combating Antibiotic Resistance
Each infection we prevent means one less round of antibiotics. That’s why hand hygiene supports antibiotic stewardship, a key global initiative against antimicrobial resistance. Following proper hand rub procedures helps reduce the misuse and overuse of antibiotics in healthcare.
Creating a Culture of Hygiene at Midvaal
At Midvaal Private Hospital, hand hygiene isn’t just encouraged—it’s embedded in our culture. We offer continuous staff training, conduct regular audits, and engage both patients and visitors in hygiene awareness. By doing so, we create an environment where safety, cleanliness, and compassion work together.
